Things To Do

February brings along the carnival week and throughout five days numerous activities take place around the island. These typically include a colourful, ticker-tape parade of floats, marching bands, artistic dances etc. The heart of the action takes place in Valletta, though other towns and villages across the Island also have their own version. The Nadur Carnival in Gozo is becoming increasingly popular, as it takes a macabre and funny twist on the traditional carnival festivities.

The celebrations of Holy Week and Easter are primarily of a religious character, taking place in churches where the faithful gather in large numbers to commemorate the passion, death and resurrection of Christ.

This feast is one of the oldest feasts celebrated in Malta and Gozo.

The Feast commemorates two important Saints in Maltese religious lore, St. Peter and St. Paul.  This feast is held in Buskett Garden which includes agricultural fairs, folk music performances (Ghana), and the drinking of local wine. This event happens the eve of June 29 the day of the feast. During the late afternoon hours, numerous horse and donkey races are held in a country lane situated just below and at some distance from Mdina.

This event taking place in Birgu (also known as Vittoriosa), which is one of Malta's oldest and most historic cities, has now become an annual national event. From inception the aim was to highlight Birgu's historic and architectural beauty and the Birgu by Candlelight, now incorporated in Birgufest, was set up to highlight this in a romantic manner.

The streets are lit up with a gentle glow by thousands of candles of all kinds. However, Birgufest has developed into a larger event with a wider scope, offering numerous activities throughout the festival. The historical re-enactments, extended and cheaper museum entrances, and the opening up to the public of other venues of interest including churches highlight the immense historic value of this city.

In addition, food stalls offering both Maltese and other food, various musical concerts - ranging from classical to modern, and various exhibitions, make this event truly an outing with something to suit all tastes and ages.

The Maltese archipelago is a seafaring nation, with one of the biggest natural harbours (Grand harbour) in all of Europe. Malta diving provides many wrecks for divers to explore, in addition to reefs, walls, caves, caverns, and swim-throughs.

The Maltese island holds a colourful calendar of traditional seasonal events, with nightlife to rival that of many European cities. Every year, an eclectic blend of local international events, entertainment and exhibitions take place. Choose from classical and jazz to band and folk music, from theatre and opera to dance and Baroque festivals.

If you have experienced Malta's vibrant nightlife scene, the first thought to cross your mind must be Paceville. All sorts of clubs and disco bars pumping out the latest hits to the delight of travellers seeking the perfect night out.

However, Malta today also offers much more refined entertainment venues. Try your luck at the top notch casino or chill-out while sipping away in a wine bar perhaps.
